Six Reasons to Upgrade From Lightroom 6 to Lightroom Classic CC

The question you need to ask yourself is how important are the new features, such as Color Range Masking, to you and your workflow?

If that is too much of an inconvenience then it may be time to upgrade to Lightroom Classic CC. These are the six main reasons that I can think of that Lightroom 6 users might want to upgrade to Lightroom Classic CC.

So make your decision wisely. Can you think of any other reason why a Lightroom 6 user might want to upgrade to Lightroom Classic CC? Have you already upgraded? Then please let us know your thoughts in the comments below. Lightroom Classic CC is only available by subscription. Lightroom 6 the previous version is no longer available to purchase outright.

One is not technically better than the other — they are intended to be used for different purposes, often in unison. Typically, a Lightroom user will only use Photoshop to edit or manipulate images in a way that Lightroom cannot. Similarly, a Photoshop user will use Lightroom in order to organise, cull and add keywords to a library of images. Yes, it is free on mobile devices. You can download the app for iOS and Android devices, and use it for free to edit and share your images.

It is optimised for desktop-focused workflows, including local storage of your photos in files and folders on your computer. Lightroom CC is the new cloud-based photo service that works across desktop, mobile and web. Lightroom Classic CC is a desktop-focused digital photography product.

However, there are certain features that are missing:. Some of these features are unnecessary for the average photographer, but others are genuinely very useful, e. RAW editing, sync presets and cloud storage. Lightroom CC: Adobe stores your original images for an additional year after your membership lapses. During this time, you can continue to launch Lightroom CC to download your original files from the cloud. You can continue to import and organise photos, as well as export your edited photos through Export, Publish, Print, Web, or Slideshow.

Lightroom 6 was the last stand-alone i. All the advantages of Lightroom lie in the subscription versions, with regular updates, powerful new features and helpful support.

If you have any other questions, please leave them in the comments below so I can consider adding them to this list.

Top reviews from the United States. There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Please try again later. Verified Purchase. I've been a big fan of Evening's books -- haven't bought them all, but maybe a half dozen. Generally his books are the best comprehensive overviews of the Adobe software.

However, I have two reservations. The first is the bad side of comprehensive. This book is very detailed not only on the use of the programs but on what I might call meta-issues -- how and why the various manipulations work. Because of all the detail and the huge size this book is not suitable as a get-started or how to do X introduction. His Lightroom Transformations is much better suited to that.

Or any of Scott Kelby's books which tend to have the opposite problem -- not enough detail on important procedures and too much emphasis on how to do specific tasks. If you're a relative novice, it's likely to be a waste of money. As a reference book it's unsurpassed. The second problem is much more minor but more irritating. There is a long index, but if you don't know the exact name of what you're looking for, your search will likely be frustrated. However recently I wanted to practice with what I recalled was the little dot you placed in parts of scene to manipulate exposure and other details.

The technical term is Target Adjustment Tool. Now if you don't know the name how are you supposed to look it up? Oh, just go to the part of the book that deals with exposure adjustments. Easy enough to find that. Well the TAT is mentioned, but at least in that part of the book never defined; nor is there a good introduction on what it is or how to access it. In a way this is an unfair criticism. As I well know from experience, indexing a book is tedious, boring, unfulfilling, and just plain hard.

Professional indexers which I'm sure the author used are sometimes better, but unless they understand the likely fumbling around of the average user, they often miss important hints. And just for comparison Kelby discussed 15 ways well, an exaggeration of how to adjust exposure while only briefly mentioning the TAT, buried in a general paragraph.

Anyway Evening has my sympathy, but that doesn't do much for the frustration. That said, it's important to remember that this is an endemic problem. So highly recommended provided you understand your needs and whether this book is likely to meet them. Five stars for doing well what it is intended to do. But it won't be 5 stars if you have different needs. I bought this book both in paper back and in Kindle format purposely.

I have bought many books by Evening and have found them to be quite complete and authoritative. The subject matter is surprisingly complex in a many areas. While the book is beyond other books in detail and very thorough, it is not flawless. I would mark the book in both formats down to a 4. But how do you know which is the best option for you? Read on to find out. For photographers who had already purchased the full version of Photoshop this represented a significant price increase.

Not only was subscribing more expensive in the long run, compared to upgrading Photoshop regularly, but the license to use the software expired once monthly payments stopped.

Read about this on forums and photography websites and you will still come across a lot of negativity towards the Creative Cloud subscription model, especially from Photoshop users upset at the loss of a perpetual licence.

But today, I aim to cut through this negativity and take an objective look at the differences between the two options. The first uses Lightroom in conjunction with Photoshop and wants access to both programs. For this user, the Creative Cloud option is the only choice if you want the latest version of Photoshop CC. Alternatively, if you own a version of Photoshop CS and are not bothered about upgrading to Photoshop CC, you can buy the standalone version of Lightroom and use them together.

How to Choose Which Version of Lightroom to Buy

Lightroom CC is the same core program running on your desktop but in a subscription version that comes with the CC Photography Plan together. Lightroom Classic is available as part of the Creative Cloud Photography plan, starting at US$/mo.

Scott Kelby. Great features, regular updates, cloud storage, multi-device functionality - lightoom Photography Plan is the best way to get Lightroom. Also added to the update are multiple export options, including options for the file type, pixel dimensions, compression and watermarks.
